Building the economic, ecological, and social resilience of the Chuk’son area and Barrio Indigenous communities through collaborative sustainable building training, renovation, construction, and the creation of a local sharing economy.

The Tucson Indigenous Adobe Initiative team, in celebration of the powerful, intercultural Indigenous Earth building techniques in the Sonoran Desert, works with low-income homeowners to revitalize adobe homes in need of renovation and repair, while providing high-level training in adobe construction, renovation, and maintenance for both homeowners and Tohono O’odham, Yaqui, Xican@, and other community members. We are also forming a hub for a generosity economy through networking, block parties, school involvement, continuous outreach, and smaller workshops.

We are also excited to announce our partnership with Pan Left Productions and Reyes Suarez to host a Youth Media Film Training, EARTH ROOTS, which is producing a film piece highlighting the beautiful intercultural history and contemporary experience of adobe and earthen construction as a process of reconnection, inspiration, and practice of living as sovereign, resilient Indigenous Nations.

Sustainable Nations has launched NativeEarth Natural Building, a service program of Sustainable Nations, offering artistic adobe plastering and murals, adobe floor construction, murals, small ecological design-build projects, and professional DIY training in straw bale, cob, and adobe construction, as well as ecological wastewater treatment and permacultural system design. Sustainable Nations is preparing to launch a national series of trainings for Native contractors and tribal construction companies in green and natural building.  We are looking for partners within the Great Lakes, Pacific Northwest, and Southwest Region that would be able to co-host a nationally-reaching week long intensive training.
